CONFESSIONAL ANGLICANS presents periodic articles for those interested in restoring Anglicanism's Evangelical, Reformed, and Catholic Faith. This is called "Confessional Anglicanism" because it interprets the Christian Faith through the prism of the Holy Scriptures as faithfully expounded in Anglicanism's confession: the 39 Articles. Articles are posted occasionally as time in a busy church planting ministry allow.
Are Anglicans "Confessional"?
Given the Theological "Hodge Podge" in the Anglican Communion today, that's an excellent question! Some Anglicans want to say that we're "Sacramental but not Confessional". Unfortunately that sounds like special pleading when the Anglican Communion has had a statement of faith since the late 1500's! The truth is that Anglicanism developed the Thirty Nine Articles *because* of their belief in the Holy Scriptures. Futhermore the Anglican Reformers believed the message of the Scriptures had been clear enough throughout the history of the church that a "consensus" document or confession could be created. When our fellow Episcopalians start saying we're "Sacramental, not Confessional", we obviously have a long way to go to return Anglicanism to its Reformed, Evangelical, and truly Catholic heritage. We have our work cut out for us, do we not? CONFESSIONAL ANGLICANS, hopefully will assist the transition from today's prevailing unbelief back to the faith of the Thirty Nine Articles and 1662 Book of Common Prayer.
The symbol at the top right of this page reminds us that we are "nothing without Jesus Christ, the Alpha and Omega". Without our confession though, who is Jesus Christ and what superlative blessing does He provide that is so great we would be nothing and have nothing without it? For that reason, we must be confessional lest our sacraments increasingly pledge to us nothing more than the kindness of an unknown god!
